In 2004, Mesoamerica led the creation of investment vehicle Mesoamerica Energy (Mesoenergy), aiming to become the regional leader in wind energy production. As a first step, Mesoenergy acquired Plantas Eólicas de Costa Rica, SRL. Mesoenergy then started identifying the best wind availability sites in Central America and attracting the best human capital to sustain the accelerated growth the company experienced. Today, Mesoenergy has over 400MW installed and under development, in 8 of the best wind sites along 4 Central American countries. Out of this capacity, 100MW are currently in pre-construction stage at Cerro de Hula project in Honduras.
In January 2010, Globeleq, a leading worldwide energy operator specialized in emerging markets and property of Actis, acquired 70% of Mesoenergy and reached an agreement with Mesoamerica to create a Joint Venture to develop new wind energy projects in Central America and adjoining regions. Mesoamerica is confident that this agreement will translate into significant developments of renewable energy for the region as well as into attractive investment opportunities for its investors. |
